A West Midlands-based medtech SME transitioned from concept to market-ready device with WMHTC guidance, benefiting from local R&D support and collaborations with Birmingham universities. With cluster assistance, the company secured six-figure investment, expanded its team, and now exports globally, illustrating the region’s strengths in skills, innovation, and international reach.
Innovation Accelerated by Collaboration
During the 2022 Commonwealth Games, 20 health tech organizations joined a coordinated Innovation Accelerator project—spanning medtech and digital health—with over £14 million invested. Participants gained access to NHS pathways, advanced prototyping, and real-world validation, demonstrating the advantage of “Connect, Collaborate, Innovate, Achieve” as the West Midlands formula for success.

Citing the West Midlands' collaborative ecosystem and skilled workforce, Thermo Fisher not only retained but expanded local operations, showcasing the region’s record-breaking performance in inward investment and its ability to retain talent and business.
