The University of Derby has been placed in the Top 50 in The Guardian University Guide 2023, a climb of 11 places. Derby is now ranked 48th out of 121 institutions, moving up from 59th.

As well as an overall ranking, The Guardian University Guide 2023 also produces league tables for subject areas.

The University has five subject tables in the Top 10 and a further three in the Top 20. Notably, four of these subject areas are new for the 2023 guide (denoted by * below). These are:

  • Hospitality, Event Management & Tourism; 3rd out of 48
  • Marketing and Public Relations*; 3rd out of 67
  • Media & Film Studies; 3rd out of 81
  • Children’s Nursing*; 4th out of 46
  • Fine Art; 6th out of 63
  • Mental Health Nursing*; 11th out of 62
  • Animation and Game Design*; 15th out of 44
  • Electrical & Electronic Engineering; 18th out of 60

The rise up the rankings has been driven particularly by improvements in average entry tariff (up to 122 from 117), continuation rates (a rise to 92.8% from 90%) and graduate prospects (up 1pp to 73%.)

Welcoming the announcement, Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, said:

“Reaching the Top 50 is testimony to our focus on academic excellence, student experience and satisfaction, as well as the employability of our graduates and the hard work of our students and staff.

“These are values which have always been at the heart of our institution, with our priority being to ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, experience and resilience to become the game-changers of the future, and I am delighted this has been recognised in the Guide.”

Many prospective students use annual guides and league tables to help them decide where they will study. The Guardian league tables rank universities according to a variety of criteria it considers most relevant to students, including satisfaction with the course, teaching, feedback, and student-to-staff ratio. Institutions receive an overall score, and individual assessments are also given for a range of criteria, including employability, spend per student and continuation.
