Founded in 1996, Tioga is one of the UK’s leading privately owned CEMs and offers a range of electronic assembly, complete product manufacture, and full turnkey solutions. Over the years, the firm has become known for its broad expertise and ability to turn its hand to just about any customer requirement. Backed by a dedication to proffering a high standard of customer service, this has proven to be a key component of the organisation’s success to date.

Although having manufactured products for most areas of the electronics sector, the firm does have specialist expertise covering telecommunications, audio and visual, security, MoD, medical, and lighting. In each area, the firm has completed a series of challenging projects to prove its capability to deliver and holds the quality standards ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 14001 and IPC, as well as complying with other notable industry standards.

Tioga maintains considerable operational capacity, which enables delivery on larger, ambitious projects. Out of its Derby headquarters, the firm boasts

48,000 sq. ft. of production space along with an additional 12,000 sq. ft. factory nearby. Out of these facilities, from design to shipment the firm undertakes all aspects of surface mount assembly (4 fully automated, in-line SMD production lines) including BGA, μBGA, fine pitch and high-speed chip shooting as well as full capability for through hole assembly, systems build, test and configuration, full box build, packaging, warehousing and shipping.

Over the past few months, Tioga has experienced commercial success and will be entering into 2021 on a strong footing due to the high performance of the electrical/electronics industry throughout the majority of the pandemic. That said, the firm has had to adapt in line with the complications of operating during COVID-19 in an industry where homeworking is predominantly impossible. To tackle this, the organisation has had to implement safety measures across its site and to its merit, has been successful in maintaining productivity across the year.

Warwick Adams, Managing Director of Tioga explained; “It has had an effect on the business in how we operate, so like every other company of our size we have spent a lot of time and energy on ensuring that we have a safe factory for our employees and any visitors. Due to manufacturing medical products and supplying other essential industries to keep the economy moving we have had to keep the business open. Accepting visitors to keep production moving means lots of investment into PPE, screening, moving people around and social distancing.”

Surprisingly, 2020 also constituted a year of investing into its factory management systems to better trace both internal and external elements of product delivery. The firm has improved both efficiencies and customer service at the same time. Significant investments have also been made into capital equipment which should sustain predicted growth for the firm, but such growth is also to be approached in a sustainable and careful fashion.

“We’re investing heavily into capital equipment, with the best part of £1.5m invested in the last 12 months on new equipment,” clarified Warwick Adams. “We expect to invest even more in the next 12 months as there’s a lot of optimism moving forward, but we’re not naïve. COVID could change that or a customer could be hit hard for a different reason, we are optimistically optimistic.” He added: “On the whole we’re in a good place and while we do have suppliers and customers on a smaller scale that have struggled, we know the government has supported businesses in the best way possible.
