As AdamsonJones looks forward to celebrating 20 years in business on 1 August, we wish to thank all our staff, clients and colleagues for their ongoing commitment to intellectual property (IP) protection. Now more than ever we are grateful to be able to continue working with such a diverse and industrious range of people, businesses and technologies.

The AdamsonJones approach
We take this opportunity to look back at the firm’s beginnings and the journey we’ve taken to get to where we are now. Specifically, the values and ethos that were the vision of founder Steve Jones, all of which are still just as important today as they were in 2000.

Open, pragmatic and effective
Steve Jones established AdamsonJones 1 August 2000; his vision was to create a more proactive and helpful firm that didn’t sit on the fence, but provided clients with open, pragmatic and effective advice to help companies use IP for their own commercial advantage.

Passion and knowledge of technology, industry and innovation
AdamsonJones has evolved from a sole practioner focusing on the chemistry and pharmaceuticals sectors, to a mid-sized firm, with practice groups covering a wide range of technical expertise including medical devices, software, engineering, and a growing trade marks practice. Increasing the size of the firm has never been about growing for the sake of growth, instead AdamsonJones has achieved organic growth by sticking to what we believe in – the provision of high quality IP services by experienced professionals with a genuine passion and knowledge of technology, industry and innovation.

Growing with our clients
We are proud to have a diverse and stable client base, many of whom have been with us for many years, starting as university spin-outs or start-ups and growing into large SMEs. AdamsonJones is honoured to work with a variety of large multinational corporations and internationally-renowned universities, and we have developed strong relationships with associates in over 20 countries throughout the world. Our reputation continues to grow amongst our clients and peers,as demonstrated by our annual inclusion in the Legal 500 UK PATMA rankings since 2014.

In 2014 we celebrated 10 years at BioCity Nottingham, part of the UK’s largest incubator for life sciences and medical technology, and where we continue to run our head office from. In 2017 we opened a new office in the centre of Leicester, to support innovation in the heart of its growing engineering and manufacturing sector. London meeting facilities were also put in place to accomodate our national clients, as well as our ourseas clients and contacts. The locations of all our offices is intended to underpin our belief in forming close working relationships with our clients to provide services that are better tailored to their needs.

Challenges and changes
2017 was a year of significant change for the firm with Steve Jones retiring and existing directors, Simon Cooper and Nic Ferrar acquiring the business. In 2019 David Gwilliam was promoted to partner and director, and Jenny Vaughan was promoted to partner.

Throughout the years, much has changed for intellectual property professionals throughout the world, from the technology we use, the way we work and the new skills we have developed to meet the needs of our clients. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant responding to even more new challenges: exploring different ways to keep in touch with clients and each other, and adapting to clients needs whilst continuing to provide the service levels they expect. In this respect our goal remains the same – to provide IP services that add real value to our clients’ businesses and put our clients in a stronger commercial position.

AdamsonJones is extremely grateful that our client base has remained committed to their IP during the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and we thank you for your continued business and support.

Simon Cooper, Nicholas Ferrar and David Gwilliam
