We are delighted to announce that two of our member businesses in the East Midlands – Upperton Pharma Solutions and SureScreen Diagnostics – have been crowned winners of the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise are designed to recognise and encourage outstanding achievements in the fields of Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through social mobility. Less than 200 awards are given out annually to recognise outstanding achievement and these are the first bearing the King’s name following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Specialist contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) Upperton Pharma Solutions, based in Nottingham, received the King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in recognition of its services in the pharmaceutical industry and its exceptional growth in overseas trade.

Upperton provides formulation and dosage form development services to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, offering clients a complete development package, encompassing early feasibility studies, process optimisation, scale up and clinical trial (GMP) manufacturing.

Over the last three years, the company achieved year-on-year growth in overseas sales of 230.8 percent, with overseas sales now accounting for more than 50 percent of total business.

Derby-based drug screening specialist SureScreen Diagnostics was handed two King’s Awards in recognition of its efforts in both Innovation and International Trade.

The company provides bespoke diagnostic solutions, and was responsible for developing the UK’s first Covid test targeting nucleocapsid proteins, which was used by the UK government during the pandemic. Over the last three years, SureScreen has achieved 355.7 percent growth in overseas sales.

The Medilink Midlands team would like to congratulate Upperton and SureScreen on their outstanding achievements – we are incredibly proud to work with companies at the leading edge of the healthcare sector.

In addition to winning the coveted King’s Award, Upperton was recently crowned winner of the Export Achievement category at the Medilink Midlands Business Awards 2023, and is now in the running for a national award at the Medilink UK Healthcare Business Awards, part of the MedTech Innovation Conference & Expo (MTI), which takes place on 7 and 8 June 2023.
