Fresh Logistics, a temperature controlled logistics company based at the EMLC Building in Derby, is putting together a scheme aimed at developing drivers who have passed their test prior to the 1st of January 1997. Drivers who hold this licence have what is known as ‘Grandfather rights’.

Since the new legislation with Digital Tacho’s, Digital cards and Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence has been launched, trying to become a class driver can become overwhelming. Even with having ‘Grandfather rights’ to drive a 7.5t lorry, you are also required to have your Digicard and Drivers CPC.

Managing Director Alan White states ‘At Fresh logistics we want good people. We also want professional drivers that are motivated and career minded. Furthermore, we want drivers that are customer focused and professional.’

‘We have a created a mechanism that can recruit and develop our van drivers to HGV drivers, starting with driving 7.5t vehicles. Once you have been driving the 7.5t, we will support you if you want to develop your skills to drive Class II and Class I vehicles.’

In the lifespan of Fresh Logistics, the company has offered constant career progression for its staff. Not only have drivers progressed through the Class vehicles with them, they have also had drivers promoted to driver trainers and put through extra training such as forklift and food hygiene level two. Fresh Logistics like to recruit from within so office opportunities are always offered to drivers. As a resident driver you are guaranteed to get an interview. This is shown with the current Operations Director Dave Price and Business Development Manager Oli Saffell, who both started with the company as drivers and have worked their way up. As an award winning company, it needs good people.
