Following a number of short industry internships back home\, she enrolled in a graduate programme in Biomedical Engineering at Hochschule Furtwangen University\, Germany\, which she completed in 2012. Supported by a full government scholarship\, Rahmi then completed her doctoral studies at the University of Portsmouth in 2019\, researching the fundamental study of bacterial two-component systems and harnessing their potential as synthetic biosensors. Rahmi carried on this research for a further 2.5 years as a Senior Research Associate\, before joining the School of Pharmacy at DMU as Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Microbiology. \n \nDr Grace Edmund\, Senior Computational Chemist\, Oxford Drug Design \nPresentation title: Targeting Antibiotic Resistance through a Novel Class of Gram-Negative Antibacterial Agents \nDr Grace Edmund is a Senior Computational Chemist at Oxford Drug Design where she leads the computational chemistry effort for their tRNA synthetase antibacterial drug discovery project. Prior to joining Oxford Drug Design in 2015\, she completed post-doctoral research at the University of Surrey in collaboration with DSTL. She received her MChem in Chemistry from Durham University and PhD in Computational Chemistry from the University of Surrey. \n \nDr Stephanie Lesage\, Co-Founder & CEO\, Oxford Silk Phage Technologies Ltd \nPresentation title: Deploying Bacteriophages to Preserve Antibiotics \nStephanie Lesage has a multidisciplinary background in biological sciences (BSc)\, technical textile engineering (MEng) and medical devices (MSc)\, with 19 years of start-up leadership experience. She is CEO of Oxford Silk Phage Technologies Ltd\, a company she co-founded in 2020\, developing a novel antibacterial material integrating bacteriophages to produce medical implants which will reduce surgical site infections and antibiotic use. Stephanie is also a founding member of Phage-UK (2021)\, aiming to make phage therapy more widely available to UK patients and she was recently invited to the House of Commons to provide oral evidence on the potential for bacteriophage therapy in the UK.

DESCRIPTION:The next MedTech & Systems Special Interest Group event will be held in person\, with a focus on the latest developments in 3D technologies and augmented reality. The presentations will consider how these fields are creating significant improvements in surgical planning and intervention. \nToday\, the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in healthcare is expanding. Augmented Reality\, Virtual Reality and Extended Reality (XR) are now much more common terms linked to the delivery of realistic interactive experiences through real-life simulation and user immersion. Technologies including the Microsoft HoloLens and the Vuzix AR platforms have provided additional and exciting possibilities linked to healthcare and surgery. Surgeons rely on information from CT scans\, MRI’s\, X-rays and other patient data sources to determine surgical requirements and to preoperatively plan prior to a surgical procedure. Jason started his my own unit in Nottingham at the QMC in 2002\, where the laboratory has become one of the most innovative centres in the field of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Reconstructive Science. \nJason has published over 30 papers and book chapters. He has also received national awards including the Chief Scientific Officers Award for Leadership and Innovation 2010 in recognition for establishing the first in-house 3D print service in the NHS. Jason has collaborated on numerous i4i and EPSRC grants (Loughborough University/Kings College & Leeds University) in the field of 3D acquisition\, printing and manufacture. \nJason co-wrote the Scientist Trailing Programme (STP) in Reconstructive Science (level 7) and was lead writer on the Higher Specialist Scientist (HSST) Consultant training (level 8) with the National School Healthcare Science and Royal College Surgeons (England). He established NUH as the field’s regional training centre in 2006 and has had the highest number of successful trainees through the national programme (STP) since its inception in 2013. Jason was invited by the British Association Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) to deliver the Presidents Lecture in 2020\, becoming only the second scientist to do so in their history. Jason has been an active professional body council member throughout his career\, serving in numerous roles culminating in 3 years as the Chair of our association (IMPT) \nCurrently I enjoy exploring emerging technologies for clinical and technical use in real life situations\, sharing ideas and collaborating with new colleges\, cars\, motorbikes\, travel and food. \n \nRory O’Connor\, NHS Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgency and Major Trauma\, Queen’s Medical Centre\, Nottingham \nRory is an expert in facial trauma and post traumatic facial deformity with a particular focus on how technology can improve patient outcomes and make treatments more efficient. Lewis has 25 years’ experience in economic development including two years at Capital for Enterprise Limited (the Bank’s predecessor)\, where he worked in the Debt Team on the Enterprise Finance Guarantee (EFG) scheme and former RDA legacy funds\, ten years at East Midlands Development Agency (emda) in the Business Investment Team and five years at Nottingham City Council\, where he managed a team and a series of grant\, loan and equity funds\, and investment readiness programmes. Lewis also has over five years commercial and personal banking experience with Lloyds Banking Group. \n \nDr Helen Compton\, Stakeholder Engagement Manager\, NIHR Coordinating Centre\nHelen joined the NIHR in 2016 to lead on stakeholder engagement activity with the charity and medtech communities and provide leadership and delivery for a number of high profile strategic and operational projects across NIHR.  Helen has led business/ governance changes at the science-policy interface with > 9 years research programmes commissioning experience. Featuring talks by local experts and key stakeholders\, this session explores the novel opportunity around Harlow and West Essex for innovation and the convergence of data and health technology. In doing so\, we ask: how can we maximise the regional\, national and global impact of our unique combination of location and resources? \nThe session will highlight several projects that are underway and planned for the town\, including the Kao Data Centre which houses the NVIDIA Cambridge-1 Supercomputer\, the ambitious\, digitally focused redevelopment of the Princess Alexandra Hospital\, and the potential relocation of the UKHSA (formerly Public Health England). The session will consider how these and other local developments make Harlow an exciting prospect and a shrewd choice for innovators and entrepreneurs working at the intersection of data and health technology. \nSpeaker Profiles: \n \nBeverley Vaughan\, Innovation Hubs Director\, Anglia Ruskin University \nDr Beverley Vaughan joined the Arise Innovation Hubs as Director in June 2021\, with over 20 years’ experience in the healthcare and life sciences sector. \nBeverley trained as a clinical scientist in Haematology and worked at Cambridge and London University Hospitals. Beverley has worked in the innovation sector for the last 10 years with roles in Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC)\, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult (CGT) and the University of Oxford. \nWhilst at SBC Beverley supported the development of translational research facilities and raised funding from multiple pharma and biotech companies for the Open Innovation Challenge in Neurodegeneration.  At CGT Beverley managed a wide portfolio of project from novel drug discovery spin outs to NHS-led delivery of cell therapy products.  Most recently she was responsible for the delivery of a drug discovery consortium-UKSPINE- pivoting traditional pathways to meet the demands of healthy aging with partners\, Universities of Oxford\, Dundee and Birmingham\, Medicines Discovery Catapult\, The Francis Crick Institute and Sanger Centre Cambridge. \nSince joining Arise as Director\, Beverley has been working on building the life science strategy for their newest hub located on the Harlow Innovation Park\, leading on strategy\, fund raising and partnering activities to build a cluster of expertise within this synapse of the London-Cambridge corridor.  She is also a member of the NC3Rs CRACKIT advisory panel. \n \nNadia Shivji-Brown\, Senior Business Development Manager\, UK Health Security Agency \nPresentation title: Introduction to the UKHSA \nNadia is a Senior Business Development Manager at the UK Health Security Agency. She has a strong background in the life sciences and has worked both in industry and academia. Nadia has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the University of Warwick. \n \nKerry Cella\, Public Health Analysis Team Lead\, UK Health Security Agency \nPresentation title: How the UKHSA uses data to understand the impact of Covid and other infectious disease on the healthcare system \nKerry is the Public Health Analysis Team Lead at the UK Health Security Agency within the All Hazards Intelligence directorate. With a background in crime science\, Kerry has worked across a diverse range of fields in government from Crime to Education and Healthcare. Substantively a Data Scientist\, Kerry leads a team of Health Analysts\, Epidemiologists and Data Scientists analysing health data to understand the impact of infectious diseases on the healthcare system. Kerry is passionate about using data to tell stories that help senior decision makers understand what the current picture is around infectious disease to help them respond effectively. \n \nRod Faul\, Senior Client Director\, Kao Data \nRod Faul started his professional career as a Secondary School Teacher having gained a BEd Hons in Sports Science and Mathematics. His love of teaching\, however\, didn’t go hand in hand with the somewhat meagre financial rewards for such an important role! As such\, Rod has been in IT/Telecoms ever since…through local access services to switchless global networking and latterly the data centre world. Kao Data has given Rod the opportunity to work more closely with the life sciences of OCP/HPC ready deployments\, allowing research to thrive without being hamstrung by the inability to scale! \n \nChris Cook\, Clinical Effectiveness\, Research and Innovation Manager\, The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust \nChris has worked in the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust for 33 years. Her first role was as the Personal Assistant to the Director of Pharmacy & Sterile Services where she focused on governance and helped to set up Clinical Risk Management in the Trust in the 1990s. Chris was subsequently involved in research supported by Culyer funding\, enabling researchers to take their work from the laboratories to the patient bedside. \nSince 2001\, Chris has developed from Research Facilitator through to Research & Development Manager before taking on her current role. Chris has grown the function from a team of just herself and two nurses to a team of nearly 20.  Originally having just five studies on their portfolio to currently having 58 studies open to recruitment and many more with patients in follow up. \nWith a new hospital imminent\, the Trust’s hopes for the future include a wholly digitalised hospital for the patients and the people. \n \nKrishna Gandhi\, Founder\, Psimonix \nKrishna Gandhi is the CEO of Psimonix\, a neurotech R&D company that provides a non-invasive screening method for hormones and neurotransmitter levels. Their method produces nearest to real-time results\, requiring just 2 minutes of EEG data. Psimonix was set up as the result of a discovery made in Krishna’s MSc dissertation project looking at EEG\, neurofeedback\, stress and cortisol in 2008. Since then\, multiple pilot studies have been carried out to investigate the proof of concept of the EEG’s capacity to measure hormones\, neurotransmitters and biomarkers.
