SUMMARY:WEBINAR: The MindTech Method: improving your chance of success in digital mental health
DESCRIPTION:  \nDigital mental health is an attractive space for SMEs as it offers not only the potential to do good but to do it in new and innovative ways. Despite digital health being a billion-pound industry\, many companies struggle as they face challenges in evaluation and barriers to implementation. On the app store there are thousands of mental health offerings but very few are evidence-based and sustainable. Our mental health system is under immense pressure with a lack of coverage for specific care and long waiting lists. There is both the need and the enthusiasm\, so why is it still so difficult? \nMindTech is a national centre\, funded by NIHR\, focusing on the development\, adoption and evaluation of new technologies for mental healthcare and dementia. MindTech specialises in applications of digital technologies such as computerised therapies and diagnostics\, deployed on smartphone apps\, wearables and virtual reality\, as well as medical devices and assistive technologies. For the past 8 years\, and alongside their Involvement Team who bring expertise by experience\, they have been working with industry\, academia and the NHS to meet the unmet needs of patients\, families and professionals through new technologies. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of MindTech’s research and will share the lessons they have learned through these collaborations from development all the way through to adoption. It will highlight how researchers and companies can work with each other and the NHS to develop and evaluate high quality evidence-based digital mental health interventions that lead to real world adoption. \nMindTech is especially pleased to showcase case study presentations from three of their industry partners: \n– BfB Labs: From problem space to solution to implementation can be a long road. At the University of Nottingham he is a member of the Bioengineering research group in the Faculty of Engineering and the Institute of Mental Health’s Centre for Dementia. Mike contributes expertise in design and evaluation of digital health\, medical device related interventions and assistive technologies. He conducts health technology assessments for NHS organisations and industry and contributes to policy on digital mental health. Currently\, he is co-investigator on several of MindTech’s large collaborations and trials of technologies which include evaluation of cognitive training software\, remote/mobile mental health and virtual reality therapy\, and various co-design projects with patients and healthcare professionals. \n\nDr Aislinn Bergin\, Research Fellow\, NIHR MindTech MedTech Co-operative\nAislinn is primarily working on the gameChange project – an automated VR therapy for people with psychosis – where her research focuses on the implementation and sustainability of complex interventions.\nAislinn has a PhD in Digital Mental Health and a BA (Hons) in Developmental Psychology. Previous research has covered the use and development of digital mental health which led her to research that could help ensure high quality evidence-based digital mental health is adopted into the health and social care economy. She has previously worked as research manager at a local Healthwatch ensuring that peoples’ voices are heard in health and social care\, which provided her with significant insight into how local health economies function. \n\nRebecca Woodcock\, Patient and Public Involvement Co-ordinator: Mental Health & Technology Research\, NIHR MindTech MedTech Co-operative\nInformed by a career championing diverse voices in the charity sector and benefiting from a recent MSC in Voluntary Sector Management\, Rebecca brings both passion and personal lived experience to supporting patient and public involvement.\nHer role involves developing and delivering our Involvement strategy\, whilst working with colleagues across the Institute of Mental Health\, other Biomedical Research Council (BRC) themes\, national bodies and industry partners to support the implementation of best practice within PPI.\nAs well as working with Researcher to develop and refine their PPI strategies\, Rebecca has recently co-produced a framework for supporting digital PPI and worked with PPI colleagues and public contributors to present at the MindTech Annual Conference. \n\nDr Charlotte Hall\, Senior Research Fellow\, NIHR MindTech MedTech Co-operative\nCharlotte’s main areas of interest include the implementation of technology to support the assessment\, monitoring and treatment of mental health disorders within children and young people\, particularly in neurodevelopmental disorders.\nCharlotte has specific expertise of the design\, conduct and management of clinical trials in community child mental health services and child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and is interested in the nuances in online trail delivery.\nCharlotte is trial manager for the ORBIT study\, which is evaluating the remote digital intervention for tics. Amongst other studies\, Charlotte is also a co-investigator on the FACT trial\, assessing the use of the QbTest for young people in prison (led by Dr Chitsabesan at the University of Manchester)\, the QUOTA Trial assessing QbTest or medication management (led by Dr Maddie Groom at the University of Nottingham) and the SATURN trial which looks at medication for children with ADHD and tics. Charlotte is also acting as site lead for the OPTIMA Trial\, investigating the online delivery of a parent ADHD intervention and is principal investigator on the WAIT study looking at waiting list interventions in CAMHS. She was also the trial manager on the AQUA Trial which investigated the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the QbTest\, the findings of which are being implemented in routine practice.\n\n\nDr Jen Martin\, Senior Programme Manager\, NIHR MindTech MedTech Co-operative\nJen has worked in the healthcare technology field for more than 20 years and is currently MindTech’s Senior Programme Manager. Prior to this\, Jen was Senior Research Fellow in Human Factors at the University of Nottingham. Jen’s interests lie in the development\, evaluation and adoption of mental health technologies such as Virtual Reality\, games and digital interventions.\nJen is a co-investigator on the NIHR-funded gameChange project which is using VR to transform the lives of people with psychosis\, and leads the implementation workstream within this. She is a member of NHS England’s Expert Reference Group for Digital Innovation and Adoption and is also an advisor to NICE as part of their work on accreditation of mobile health apps. \n\nManjul Rathee\, CEO\, BFB Labs\nManjul is an impact entrepreneur\, with deep expertise in service design & product innovation in a variety of sectors (including health tech\, youth welfare\, wellness travel and more). She is the CEO of BFB Labs\, a highly innovative mental health tech company developing cutting edge digital therapeutics for better youth mental health\, and the Co-founder of sight loss public health initiative Eye Heroes. She has a Masters in Sustainability\, and has led the development of multi-award winning digital products/services and taking them to market nationally and internationally. \n\nAndrew Jackson\, Chief Executive\, ProReal\nAs a Partner at PwC and an Executive in IBM\, Andrew has over 25 years’ experience supporting organisations and people through change. Curious about coaching and technology\, Andrew was the co-founder of ProReal Ltd\, a company and a team who believe in a world where relationships and sense-making are built on more than words. They have developed an avatar-based 3D visualisation technology to help people tell their stories and share how they see the world. ProReal’s research programme describes the technology’s adoption in healthcare\, prisons\, schools\, and social care settings\, and by several NHS Trusts. \n\nJo Barosa\, Account Director\, QbTech and UK & Operational Lead for the National Programme Focus ADHD\nWorking for over 2 decades in the ADHD arena\, 10 of them at Qbtech\, Jo is passionate about improving outcomes for children and adults by consulting on ADHD care pathways and supporting clinicians\, services and Trusts with business plans\, clinical information and governance and procurement considerations to secure additional funding needed to support positive change\, including adoption of objective testing (QbTest).

He has considerable experience of evaluating new technologies and medical devices and introducing them into the healthcare setting. Dan also holds an honorary chair in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham and is co-director of the Centre for Healthcare Technologies\, a unique collaborative venture between Nottingham University and NUH NHS Trust specialising in the acceleration of curiosity driven science into adopted medical technology. He also chairs the NUH NHS Trust’s Medical Devices Group and sits on a number of trust-wide risk committees. Finally\, Dan was an expert member of the NICE Medical Technology Advisory Committee (MTAC) for 10 years until his “retirement” from the committee in 2019. Dan is a director and founder member of CHEATA since its inception in late 2014. Dan was awarded an OBE for Services to Clinical Engineering particularly during Covid-19 in the 2021 New Years Honours. \n\nDr Sarah Bolton\, CHEATA Business Manager \nSarah has been the Business Manager for CHEATA since August 2016. Prior to joining CHEATA\, Sarah was responsible for Healthcare and Medical Devices at Pera Technology\, a role which included project delivery\, client engagement and management\, project planning and management as well as bid writing for major UK and EC funding bodies. Sarah is an experienced research scientist with a background in academic and clinical inflammation research where she undertook her post-doctoral studies on inflammatory mechanisms in the brain and activation mechanisms of eosinophils in asthma. She joined AstraZeneca in 2004 as an Experimental Pathologist in the Respiratory and Inflammation Therapy area\, specialising in translation pathology of COPD and asthma. After leaving AZ\, Sarah worked as an independent consultant continuing the experimental pathology work for a range of academic and commercial clients. \n

He has more than 20 years’ experience in research exploring the application of Additive Manufacturing and advanced design technologies in surgery\, prosthetics\, orthotics and medical devices. He founded the Medical Applications Group at PDR in 1998 and led it for 10 years. He moved to Loughborough University in 2008 and founded the Digital Design & Fabrication research group in 2014. \n \nGareth Probert\, Partner\, UK and European Patent Attorney\, EIP\nGareth is a partner at the patent firm EIP and heads the EIP HealthTech practice group\, an interdisciplinary team specialising in protecting innovations in the medtech and healthcare sectors. He also focusses on contentious proceedings before the European Patent Office\, often handling multi-party oppositions for commercially significant patents. During his 20-year career in the profession Gareth has gained substantial experience in the medtech and healthcare space\, along with the FMCG\, formulations\, peptide\, food and chemical sectors. \n\nDimitris Katsanis\, Founder & CEO\, Metron Additive Engineering\nDimitris is the founder and CEO of Metron Additive Engineering\, an ISO 13485 and AS9100 certified company\, active in the field of Additive Manufacturing of metallic components.\nSince 2015\, he leads a team of engineers and scientists working on the design and manufacturing of parts used in a variety of industries. She holds a MSc in Clinical Biochemistry\, a PhD in Transdermal Absorptions and over 20 years of global work experience in the personal care and wound care industry. Katerina has an in-depth knowledge of skin biology in both its healthy and diseased states. The strengths Katerina brings to NBIC comprise a comprehensive understanding of the industry and academia\, commercialisation of research in a spectrum of healthcare areas and an experience of running an innovation consultancy with a focus on functional skincare.\n \n\nDr David Cleary\, Career Track Post-Doctoral Fellow\, Faculty of Medicine\, University of Southampton and the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre\nDavid graduated in Medical Microbiology from the University of Surrey in 2002 and went on to complete his PhD with the University of Warwick whilst employed as a microbiologist at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (DSTL)\, Porton Down. His current research interests include characterising human respiratory tract microbiomes to determine the microbiota-host interactions that determine colonisation and progression to disease\, as well as understanding the epidemiology of pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae. \n\nDr David Caballero-Lima\, Head of R&D\, Labskin\nDavid received his undergraduate degree in Biology and his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Universidad de Extremadura in Spain. David took postdoctoral research positions at the University of Sheffield and the University of Manchester\, with both roles focussing on studying human/pathogen interaction via tissue models and obtaining a greater understanding in the regulation of the cell cycle and vesicle transportation during morphological changes.\nDavid was initially Services Manager at Labskin\, bringing his 18 years’ experience working with microbiology and host-pathogen interactions.  As Head of R&D\, David now leads the research department\, focusing on the development of new methods for studying the native skin microflora\, prebiotic\, probiotics and antimicrobial effects of ingredients and formulation for pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical studies. He is also the scientific lead for the development of Labskin new consumers service; Skin Trust Club. David is a key collaborator on international research bids\, as a peer with leading international experts from academia and industry. \n\nPaul Marshall\, Engineering Consultant\, Co-Founder of Rapid Fluidics Ltd\nAn experienced Chartered Mechanical Engineer\, Paul lead the engineering for QuantuMDx Ltd in Newcastle to develop the Q-POC point of care mobile diagnostics system and is now an engineering consultant specialising in Life Sciences. His works covers a wide range of projects from microfluidic instrumentation and consumable systems design for diagnostics through to technical reviews of water\, sanitation and health projects for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. \n\nDr Raymond Allan\, Senior Lecturer in Microbiology\, De Montfort University\nRaymond’s research focusses on the investigation of bacterial biofilms\, developing an understanding of the adaptive mechanisms they employ to enable their survival within the human host\, and their role in chronic infectious disease. His research also includes the identification of targets for the development and investigation of novel treatment strategies for biofilm-associated infections. He has several years’ experience investigating biofilms at University of Southampton\, the National Biofilms Innovation Centre\, and Southampton NIHR Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility\, before joining De Montfort University. \n

DESCRIPTION:Ten months on from Brexit – we are seeing a set of challenges and opportunities facing the life science sector\, a time of technological change across fields like biotech\, medtech and AI. \nAmong the specific challenges are the new\, dual systems for mainland UK and Northern Ireland\, with NI needing to apply regulations flowing from Brussels. Sales in NI may require new Economic Operator arrangements\, for example.\nAlongside these challenges\, the UK is finding its feet in developing its own systems and structures. Opportunities like a more flexible and permissive regulatory model\, involving acceptance of goods approved elsewhere subject to proportionate\, risk-based controls\, could see a reduced regulatory burden\, especially for smaller innovators. The fresh approach proposed in the Taskforce on Innovation\, Growth and Regulatory Reform report offers a prospect of real benefits to industry. \nBusinesses across the sector also continue to face challenges and opportunities in recruiting and retaining talented staff. A key aspect of her research is in examining digital solutions that support development of integrated models of health and social care and community engagement. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nProfessor Ivan Browne\, Director of Public Health at Leicester City Council \nIvan Browne is the Director of Public Health at Leicester City Council and has been spearheading the local response to COVID 19 in the City.  He is a professor of public health practice with De Montfort University and has a particular interest in the potential of digital technologies to improve population health and wellbeing. \n  \n  \n  \n \nLouise Rogerson\, Chief Operating Officer\, Howz \nLouise Rogerson is a physiotherapist with 18 years experience working within the NHS as a frontline clinician\, operational service manager\, and latterly as a commissioner.  As a commissioner Louise was responsible for development of healthcare service pathways at a population level including stroke\, palliative care\, and CVD.  Seeing the data available to her as a commissioner Louise realised that more needed to be done to fill the data gap for older people to enable access to support services before they hit crisis point. \nAs Chief Operating Officer for Howz\, Louise is responsible for the customer experience\, building partnerships\, project management\, and team development. Howz describes the daily routine for an individual through smart meter data and other sensors and aims to detect changes earlier.  Louise is part of the Surrey NHS project management team providing expertise in both development and implementation of remote monitoring.  Louise also continues to run her own practice as a physiotherapist with a special interest in neurology and older people. \n  \n  \n This webinar is part of Leicester Business Festival 8-18th November.
