SUMMARY:Midlands Engine Innovation Group Medical Technologies and Pharma Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Midlands Engine (an initiative to make the East and West Midlands an engine for growth in the UK economy) completed a government sponsored Science & Innovation Audit over the summer. The audit was developed through a wide range of consultation and analysis of data across many different stakeholders. \nThe Audit identified four market driven priorities\, one of which is ‘Medical Technologies and Pharma’ which our region has world-leading aspects in and the potential to develop further. The Midlands Engine has established an Innovation Group\, in part to take forward the results of the audit and help build cases for investment in the infrastructure and ecosystem. The first opportunity to develop such proposals will be for potential inclusion in the Spring budget. \nYou’re invited to attend this workshop to support the development of proposals relating to ‘Medical Technologies and Pharma’. To find out more information or register your place\, please click here.

SUMMARY:A Midlands Engine Masterclass from MasterControl & UL
DESCRIPTION:Medilink East Midlands and West Midlands\, together with MasterControl\, and their partner UL LLC\, are pleased to offer a Midlands Engine Masterclass which will focus on the proposed changes to the Medical Device Regulation for the European Market. These changes are due to come into effect in late 2019 or early 2020\, detailing how they will impact all medical device manufacturers. \nMasterControl is a global provider of quality management software and services and UL LLC is a global independent health sciences company. \nThe masterclass will give delegates the opportunity to hear MasterControl & UL discuss the requirements within the regulation\, particularly concentrating on: \n\nCE Mark transition periods\nHeightened post market surveillance\nVigilance activities expected\nHow notified bodies will be required to act going forward\n\nThis will undoubtedly have an impact on the number of notified bodies left to cover the needs\, and costs will invariable rise. \nMasterControl & UL will also examine the new products brought within scope of the Regulation that have previously not had a medical purpose\, and how this might impact manufacturers not previously under the MDR requirements. \nTo register your place at this event\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Early Diagnosis Industry Challenge: Pre-launch information and discussion session
DESCRIPTION:The National Cancer Vanguard is delighted to announce a unique opportunity for a select group of industry partners to work on projects to improve early diagnosis of cancer. In preparation for the launch of the Early Diagnosis Industry Challenge they are making an open invitation for potential partners to hear more about the call before the formal launch. \nThe call will launch in late February and close in March 2017. The aim is to engage expertise from outside the NHS to undertake a smaller number of high impact projects which will ultimately lead to a tangible improvement in the earlier diagnosis of cancer in the NHS. \nBackground to the Early Diagnosis Industry Challenge\n\nRealising improvements in patient outcomes and experience which can be scaled effectively across the NHS is the core aim of the Cancer Vanguard. Early diagnosis is crucial to improving outcomes for cancer patients. In the UK we know there is a need to diagnose cancer earlier in order to achieve survival outcomes comparable to best practice internationally.   Engaging the expertise and capability of partners outside the NHS through this challenge process will serve to better realise this aim. \nThis call follows a similar process in 2016 which engaged successfully with partners in the pharmaceutical industry to support deliverables in medicines optimisation.  This resulted in five projects which are on track to deliver significant\, scalable benefits for patients and support improved financial sustainability in the NHS. \nPlease contact the Cancer Vanguard team at CancerVanguard@uclh.nhs.uk if you have further questions or would like to book your place at the information and discussion session on 8 February.

SUMMARY:Cyclops Healthcare Network - Grand Challenge Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Applications are invited for participation at the EPSRC-funded Cyclops Healthcare Network Grand Challenge Workshop. Participants will explore applications of closed loop control systems for optimising the treatment of patients in three clinical areas: intensive care\, chronic wound care\, cancer care. \nA maximum of 60 delegates will participate in the workshop in order to ensure high quality networking. If the event is oversubscribed\, then participants will be selected\, to ensure a balance of skillsets\, clinical areas of interest and roles on the pathway to adoption. \nWorkshop delegates will be eligible to bid for a share of £300k for feasibility studies. \nWhat are closed loop control systems for optimising treatment? \nA treatment that is optimised and personalised can significantly improve patient outcomes across a range of medical conditions. The closed loop control approach involves continuously monitoring key clinical parameters and\, informed by mathematical models\, adapting treatment. \nChallenges that might be addressed using closed loop control include: the delivery of treatment to cancer patients\, the moment-to-moment management of critically ill (or injured) patients\, and the accelerated healing of chronic wounds. These are the three clinical exemplar areas of focus of the Cyclops network. \nWho should participate? \n  \n\nYou must work in an area that has the potential to be applied to the optimisation of healthcare treatment through closed loop control systems.\nParticipants will be those with expertise and/or experience in the following disciplines (this list is not exclusive): medical devices\, sensors\, mathematical modelling\, artificial intelligence\, human factors\, risk management\, psychology of healthcare\, patient group representatives\, clinicians from the clinical exemplar areas and healthcare managers.\nParticipants may be from any stage of the path to adoption\, from blue-skies’ researchers to device manufacturers and device users.\nParticipants may be from any career stage; early career researchers are encouraged to participate.\nApplicants for funding must be able to attend both days of the workshop.\nOnly those who attend the workshop may lead bids for feasibility studies.\n\nTo find out more about this workshop and register your place\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Oiling the Midlands Engine-Access to Innovation Funding
DESCRIPTION:Availability of funding options is at an all-time high but it is not always clear what is available and how to apply. \nR&D Tax Credits is increasingly popular with SME and large companies who have invested money in R&D activities.
