“Data Protection & GDPR Overview for the Life Sciences Sector” – Lowri Phillips & Helen Snow, Partner and Senior Associate at Geldards LLP
So what is the GDPR? The Information Commissioner has called it a “game changer for everyone”. The GDPR is the new EU data protection framework which harmonises standards across all Member States. The GDPR will directly apply in the UK from 25 May 2018. As an organisation in the Life Sciences Sector you will not only be dealing with personal data but you are also likely to be processing sensitive personal data or special categories of data such as genetic, biometric or health data, which is given additional protection under the GDPR. Although May 2018 may seem like a long way off, there is much to be done in terms of preparation. Once it comes in it will have an immediate impact and certain breaches could result in fines of up to €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover. It is, therefore, something that should be on your radar now.
