Nottingham-based deaf charity, The Ear Foundation, is advising local businesses that they could be unwittingly losing business by ignoring hearing loss at work.
With one in six people with some form of hearing loss, the chances are that a colleague or client is likely to be living with it – whether or not anyone they are
working or meeting with is aware of it.

Hearing loss is all too often an invisible disability, with many people struggling unnecessarily to communicate in the workplace. It can lead to employees no longer
working effectively and at worst, can even prevent customers and clients from accessing a business.

The Ear Foundation is calling on local businesses to become more aware of hearing loss in the workplace. Sue Archbold, Chief Executive of The Ear Foundation explains:
“People with hearing loss are often unaware, embarrassed or in denial about their problem; those working alongside them, whether colleagues, customers or clients,
can be equally embarrassed and frustrated.

“But by recognising there is a problem, and making some small adjustments in workplace style, layout and communication methods, many of these difficulties can be
overcome.”

The Ear Foundation is offering a Deaf Awareness Workshop on Tuesday 27 September, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at its offices in Lenton, Nottingham. The workshop, which will be delivered by an experienced professional, aims to help managers and employees to communicate more confidently with people with hearing loss, leading to a more content and efficient working environment.
