Barker Brettell, a leading UK firm of intellectual property specialists, named in 2020 by The Financial Times in its top list of patent firms, is celebrating a milestone anniversary for two of its patent partners and attorneys – Lucy Trueman and Andy Tranter.

Lucy and Andy have both forged impressive careers for themselves whilst at the firm. Andy joined in 1995 as a trainee, qualified in 1999, became a partner in 2001 and was elected to managing partner in 2018. He boasts a wealth of patent expertise, including, but not limited to, international portfolio management, IP audits, UK-IPO litigation, and design and copyright matters. He has a real passion for the automotive sector, specialising in advanced and mechanical engineering. Lucy also started in 1995, qualified in 1999 and has been a partner since 2001. She is head of both the firm’s medical sector and Chemistry team.

“It has been wonderful to be part of the growth and success of the firm over the time I have been here,” Lucy commented. “It’s been exciting to see client types and technologies expand with changes in society and business. I work with great people and lovely clients, and I have enjoyed watching and getting involved with training new starters and growing my experience within the firm.”

Andy added: “It has been an honour to not only watch the firm grow and develop over the last 25 years, but to now have a role in steering the firm into the future. We really like to nurture our talent and many of our staff have been with us for a long time which says a lot about our business. We’ve achieved so much during my time with the firm, and whilst the market may appear uncertain, we are in a strong position to move forward. We have great people and great clients so I’m really exciting about what is ahead of us

Headquartered in Birmingham and with offices in Southampton, London, and most recently Stockholm, Barker Brettell is well known for retaining its staff. Many of the senior attorneys joined as trainees and the firm has a reputation for nurturing home grown talent. The firm has recently been recognised by Compumark as ‘Top 2 UK representative for UK trademark and EUTM applications 2020 YTD’; and ranked by The World Trademark Review (WTR) as ‘Top Swedish EU TM filer 2019’.
